A national survey released Friday during World Cancer Day, shows that the majority of Canadians feel cancer should be the top priority for health research, and that most would readily take part in research. Well, now's your chance to transform words into action. The Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow Project is looking for 300,000 people to take part in the largest-ever Canadian study designed to help us better understand cancer and other chronic diseases. And yes, that means you. All you have to do is sign up at www.partnershipfortomorrow.ca and surrender less than an hour of your time to get started. "It's a pretty easy way to contribute to the health of future Canadians," says Dr. Heather Bryant, vice-president of cancer control at the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer. "People are really becoming very engaged in it." Recruitment for research candidates is now on in New Brunswick. Google the word "Atlanticpath" for information on the local recruitment effort and how to sign up. Here on the East Coast, The Atlantic PATH is recruiting 30,000 men and women aged 18 to 69 from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador. Such a massive study of so many people that is taking place over the next 30 years will generate so many benefits in the fight against cancer that it's difficult to fathom. The bottom line is, the study is expected to offer key insights into why some people get cancer while others do not. Understanding the answer to that simple question could lead to giant leaps in cancer prevention, detection and cures. Such a huge study will not only, hopefully, provide answers to age-old questions about cancer, but equally important, it will open the door to new questions to be explored in the battle against what is a modern-day plague. "There may be research questions in future years that we haven't even imagined yet," Bryant enthuses.
